Cruised down the Swan River to Fremantle. Breezy but flat
water so would’ve made for brilliant sailing. River is lined with beautiful
modern houses (think glass and stainless steel, art deco style) including one
which set the record for the most expensive house in Australia when it was sold
to a mining tycoon!

Atmosphere somewhat polluted (literally) by a sheep ship
smelling of sheep shi… well, you can guess!
Went up Monument Hill to the War Memorial which has great
views of the nearby islands including Rottnest and ‘snake island’.

Lovely lunch in Fisherman’s Harbour – BBQ scallops for Karen
and marinated sardines plus smoked octopus for me – yum!
 |
| Lunch! |
Walked around Fremantle which is very arty and covered in
sculptures and random ‘art’, went around ‘The Roundhouse’ – a gaol built in
1830 and was the first permanent building in Fremantle and is the oldest
building in Western Australia.

On the way back we stopped at Cottesloe Beach where it was
raining and blowing a hoolie and we saw some Galahs (Karen says they are pink
pigeons!).

| A Galah... |

| Raining? In Australia?? In the summer??? |
Went for a walk along the river after we got back, apparently black swans aren't that common... we saw several - including one nesting and another with a cygnet.
Loving your posts! Really upping the excitement for our trip next year. X
ReplyDeleteWe've been here 2 days... I think I could happily not come back to the UK...
ReplyDeleteThink it's quite odd that the Australians keep talking about their black swans and how difficult to spot them. We have seen several now plus don't the Ozzies know we have them too (in Dawlish)!
ReplyDeleteWell the UK is looking pretty miserable out there at the moment!!
ReplyDeleteAs Louise has said, these updates are great... :)
Been there, done that!
ReplyDeleteG'day, cobblers!
ReplyDeleteOnly just joined you on your trip (Wot, no spreadsheet?) as I've been having trouble with my Google - (probably an age thing ;-) ) and having read all 10 days in a morning I'll have to go for a lie down before I face the rigours of changing my Hoover bag.
Glad to see that Nick has so far managed to stay relatively uninjured, but still early days I suppose.........
