Day 5 - Yanchep National Park, Aqwa and wine tasting

Today we were mostly seeing the local flora and fauna. We saw Grass Trees which look like Cousin It in a Tina Turner wig, Kangaroos, Galahs, Eucalyptus trees, Kookaburras, Koala, Black cockatoos and white ones, Ibis, golfers, white wine and red and some sparkling, also dessert and fortified wines... mmmm!

In Yanchep National Park (where it rained heavily and was quite windy and cold) we got very excited when we saw kangaroos from the coach on the way in... but it only got better!

We saw some sleeping Koalas and one which woke up when food was presented to it (they have opposable digits on all four limbs you know):

We then got to see loads of kangaroo families - including a mother with suckling joey...

Another mother with a baby headfirst in her pouch...

Got a great shot of a Kookaburra, not in a gum tree but apparently auditioning for a a role in Taxi Driver...

Are you lookin' at me...?

We went on to the Aquarium of Western Australia (Aqwa) which was amazing (and it rained, was windy and bloody chilly!).

Busselton (Tammy's home town) is clearly more famous than we realise and was referred to in a display:

You got to stand on a moving walkway which took you along a tunnel in the 3 million litre tank full of sea life native to Western Australia. You could get really 'up close and personal' with the denizens of the deep including...

Smooth rays

Turtles

and sharks (with lots of teeth!):

You could also touch a (small) shark and starfish (Karen didn't, I did).

After lunch we had a look round the shops (meh!) but didn't buy anything...

Then off to Sandalford Estates for wine tasting (yay!), where after checking out about 8 or more wines (hic!) we purchased a bottle of fortified wine which should make a nice accompaniment to christmas pudding (yum!).

Quite tired now, off to Alice Springs tomorrow plus boomerang throwing and bush BBQ...

  1. Hmm I was planning on snorkeling at the barrier reef but having had close encounters today with Oz marine life (albeit through very thick glass), not so sure now!

  2. Rofl. Bussleton is quite famous and (along with Margaret River) highly desirable.
